Apparently there was some content posted to digg by Brave New Films a few days ago compiling all the sexual images shown along side Fox News stories. Basically BNF was highlighting the hypocrisy of a "family values" network — who continue to feign outrage over the morale decline of America — gratuitously showing content that would seem to be exactly of the kind that is the source of said decline.
(The point of this article is not the video itself, it all seems pretty childish to me anyway, so continue reading and I'll eventually get to my point).
Well, later in the day this posting was banned because of "inappropriate content" (the humor of digg deciding what is inappropriate is another story all together), even though the footage was all sourced from actual Fox News broadcasts.
Anyway, Keith Olbermann featured this story in his sarcastic, mock-outrage filled segment Best Persons In The World yesterday, making digg.com the #1 Best Person In The World because of their censorship. And this is when I really became interested in this crap.
Living in their perpetual bubble of self importance, some of the users on digg seemed to miss the sarcasm part of the Best Persons In The World segment (just read the comments), and viewed this instead as more evidence that they are becoming a vital source of news for the inept mainstream media. There were pats on the back all around.
Wake up.
This story was featured because of the misguided censorship. That is NOT something to be proud of. Now I'm sure some people saw this as a good thing because it was sort of a self-correcting mechanism. But there were waaaaay too many comments trumpeting digg. Maybe they didn't actually read the content before commenting or digging (not uncommon on that site) and just assumed digg on Olbermann was a good thing. And please tell me this person was being sarcastic.
To digg's credit, someone saw the error and eventually corrected it, unbanning the content and the poster Brave New Films. But aside from all that, the thing that amuses me the most about this is the fact that so many of the comments were celebratory in nature when the situation was anything but. I'll say it again, wisdom of the crowds my ass (TM).
