How has this clean method of clearing floats not gotten any attention? For those that can't find it in the article, instead of using a clearing element (<div style="clear:both;"></div> or <br style="clear:both"/>), you simple add overflow:auto to the styles of the wrapper element. Nick and I were both a little skeptical, until we tried it on a layout we were working on. Seems to work. Anyone want to find me an instance where it doesn't?

For those in the Rochester, NY area, just a heads up that the third BarCamp Rochester will be happening on April 5th, 2008 at RIT. I'll be there (don't know about Nick), so if you're attending, say hello.

It's been pretty quiet around here the last couple weeks. We know. That's because we've been hard at work with tons of new updates and features for billQ. If you haven't checked it out in a while, be sure to catch up on all the new features and updates by heading over to the billQ blog.

7 reasons I switched back to PHP after 2 years on Rails, written by Derek Sivers of cdbaby.com, could not sum up any better the reasons why the new version of billQ is now written in PHP and no longer in Rails. I'll probably write a longer article about this and my experiences on the new billQ blog later on, but for now you can read that article and know exactly why we made the choices we did. Sorry Rails.

For all you developers out there that have ever had issues with your div backgrounds disappearing in IE and no idea why. Try adding -- height: 100% -- to your div or container element's CSS. Took me a little bit to figure that one out; thought I'd pass on the tip.

I had a pretty sweet pseudo-celebrity sighting this weekend. You all probably know the Chocolate Rain kid, right? Yeah. He was at the Optimus block party I attended on Friday. The best part? He was wearing a "Chocolate Rain" t-shirt! [Thanks Feeny!] The only thing better would have been if I run into John Mayer and he did a little Chocolate Rain rendition for me. That would have been sweet.

Design and Zen

A quote from Chapter 14 of Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance: "Peace of mind isn't at all superficial, really," I expound. "It's the whole thing. That which produces it is good maintenance; that which disturbs it is poor maintenance. What we call workability of the machine is just an objectification of this peace of mind. The ultimate test's always your own serenity. If you don'... Read More

What happens when 70 people get together and decide to create a startup? vosnap. This past weekend Erica O'Grady, who helped me organize the first Rochester Barcamp, took part in Startup Weekend, an event where members attempt to created a startup in one weekend. While still not totally up and running, I think Startup Weekend is a great idea to get people out and creating new stuff. I look forward to seeing vosnap in action when it's completely up and running.

You know how they say, "we kid because we love"? I'm still deciding whether there is any love here. Funny and entertaining none the less.

Rolling Stone has an interesting article about the decline of the Record Industry along with an article about possible futures for the Record Industry in this growing digital age. I'm actually amazed at how horrible (and typical of the current industry mentality) a couple of the theories are. Haven't the labels learned from all the mistakes they've made over the last 7 years? The closest thing to my own predictions would be a hybrid of theories 3 and 4.
