Blogs: The Wrong Tool?

I'm starting to wonder if the blog format is really the best way to present the type of content we, and most other "bloggers," tend to produce. Basically, is displaying content by date, when most of the content is not date-sensitive, the correct format? Maybe it's time to reevaluate that convention. When you think of the type of content you normally write, is any of it really date sensitive?... Read More

It's Niiice

The three movies that I can remember making the best use of, or benefiting the most from the Internet have been The Blair Witch Project, Snakes on a Plane, and more recently Borat. Despite the respective internet buzz I never saw the first two in the theaters (and have still yet to see Snakes on a Plane), but this past weekend I broke the trend and saw Borat. Honestly, I was feeling a littl... Read More

It's A Post 11-7 World

A comment by Jeff Croft in this post over at the 37signals blog got my attention. The post was about election coverage graphics and data visualizations and Jeff's comment pointed to the Flash interface at Lawrence Journal World. It was apparently designed for the most part by Nathan Borror. I was really impressed by the fluidity and usability of the interface and thought it was worth mentioning... Read More

Setting The Mood

The design of physical products can really have an impact on how we feel. The size, weight, texture, smell, temperature, etc. are all key in creating mood and dictating the experience surrounding the product. But on the web, the number of senses we have access to is limited. We basically rely on sight, sound, and indirect elements of touch to create mood (and most of the time sound tends to be ... (mt) Grid-Server. Anyone?

Has anyone gotten the new Grid-Server plan from Media Temple? Even though I am still completely satisfied with Site5 as our host, I will admit that (mt) has me quite curious. I'd love to hear some evangelism. Read More

Blogosphere Talking Points

Note: I am not going to talk about the Google purchase of YouTube. We are so predictable. If Edgar Cayce had an Internet connection he wouldn't need to rely on that creepy trance-like state he so perfected. Because lets face it, trances make you look about as cool as does riding a Segway. But seriously, what makes us so predictable? I'll tell you. It's the fact that, as mini-experts, we... Read More

Strange Coincidence

A few weeks ago we were having some trouble with comment spam here on the blog. Wordpress was catching about 15 spam comments per day and holding them in the comment moderation queue. But a handful more were squeaking through and showing up on the live site. I was starting to get annoyed with the task of moderating comments, so I installed Akismet. Overall, a very easy process. Although the ... Read More

They Lost Me At Ripoff

I was checking out CSSMania and came across the site for a new product called Switchboard. This product is a kind of hybrid blog/forum and it actually sounds kind of interesting. Plus it's hosted and it's free, which removes the barrier of entry for a lot of people. (We'll see if they can make a business out of it.) But aside from all that, one thing bothered me about the product. The design... Read More

Choosing The Wrong Tool

Pier Inc, recently launched their new site powered by a custom Flash blog/cms engine. My conclusion? It's really an example of digging a hole with a stick of dynamite instead of a shovel. Now, I'll admit, at a quick first glance I thought it looked promising, but thankfully Evan snapped me back to reality saying: Funny how Flash is trying to imitate things that are easy to do with CSS. Th... Read More

Next Page Last

Maybe it's just me, but I find the Next Page, Previous Page links in paginated blogs to be a little annoying. Why? Because everyone handles it a little differently. When you are at the bottom of your first page of entries, you see the link to go to the previous page. That works fine. But get a few pages deep and the previous/next nomenclature becomes a bit confusing. Once I start to get som... Read More
