A Look At The Totally Clueless Cell Phone Industry
By Nick Adams on 02.29.08
I just read this article from the New York Times about cell phone companies and their attempts to change their approach to phone design in order to "make customers happy, as Apple seems to do." Reading this article really shows how clueless and far off they are.
For example, listen to a typical LG approach:
LG Electronics, the maker of the Chocolate and Voyager phones, begins by asking fo... Read More
Washingtonpost.com News Widgets
By Nick Adams on 08.30.07
While reading this article on the Washington Post website I noticed a new (new to me at least) feature offered by the Post that allows you to add their news content to your site through little Flash widgets.
If you scroll to the bottom of the article you will see the "Iraq News to Your Site" section which allows you to grab the news widget code for your own site. They also make it easy to a... Read More
Helping Explain OpenID
By Zack Gilbert on 03.14.07
A little while ago my friend Justin Thorp made a post basically asking: What is OpenID and why should I care? I was wondering the same thing, and with all the recent chatter in the blogosphere about it, I decided to do a little bit of research. Hopefully I can help explain it to everyone else who was in the same position I was just a few days ago.
What Exactly Is OpenID?

Vista vs OS X, The Neverending Story
By Nick Adams on 02.02.07
This morning I read the recent Newsweek interview with Bill Gates regarding the launch of Vista. In the interview there was the now expected question about Vista containing many features already in place in OS X. To me, this issue is way overplayed. The question has just become an easy way for lazy journalists -- who have no idea what they are talking about -- to drum up a compelling sub-plot. ... Read More
Blogs: The Wrong Tool?
By Nick Adams on 01.10.07
I'm starting to wonder if the blog format is really the best way to present the type of content we, and most other "bloggers," tend to produce. Basically, is displaying content by date, when most of the content is not date-sensitive, the correct format? Maybe it's time to reevaluate that convention.
When you think of the type of content you normally write, is any of it really date sensitive?... Read More
(mt) Grid-Server. Anyone?
By Zack Gilbert on 10.17.06
Has anyone gotten the new Grid-Server plan from Media Temple? Even though I am still completely satisfied with Site5 as our host, I will admit that (mt) has me quite curious. I'd love to hear some evangelism. Read More
Building A Better Desktop
By Nick Adams on 10.13.06
This piece of software brought me back to a post I've had peculating for a while now. It's called Overflow, and it's an application launcher for OS X that is kind of a hybrid between the Dock, and Quicksilver. I'm not going to explain it in detail, the best way to see what it's all about is just to watch the video on their site. But what this really got me thinking about, was that there has to ... Strange Coincidence
By Nick Adams on 10.03.06
A few weeks ago we were having some trouble with comment spam here on the blog. Wordpress was catching about 15 spam comments per day and holding them in the comment moderation queue. But a handful more were squeaking through and showing up on the live site. I was starting to get annoyed with the task of moderating comments, so I installed Akismet.
Overall, a very easy process. Although the ... Read More
Choosing The Wrong Tool
By Nick Adams on 09.14.06
Pier Inc, recently launched their new site powered by a custom Flash blog/cms engine. My conclusion? It's really an example of digging a hole with a stick of dynamite instead of a shovel. Now, I'll admit, at a quick first glance I thought it looked promising, but thankfully Evan snapped me back to reality saying:
Funny how Flash is trying to imitate things that are easy to do with CSS.

Bootcamp and/or Parallels?
By Zack Gilbert on 08.16.06
About 3 weeks ago, I decided to get myself a new MacBook. So far, I absolutely love it. Using it along side my primary desktop machine at the office has been amazing. I started out using the MacBook only for simple, personal stuff (email, chat, iTunes, etc) and continued to use my desktop for actual development. After about a day or two of that (and an upcoming trip to Chicago), I realized that... Read More
